A GPS Phone is a mobile phone with an integrated GPS system which can be used for traveling and tracking purposes. These devices usually include built-in maps and turn-by-turn direction software but lack loggers.
It’s been interesting to watch these two areas of technology converge. A number of smartphones including the BlackBerry, as well as Nokia’s N95 and 6110 Navigator offer integrated GPS, and Nokia has recently announced a bunch of GPS-enabled models for later this year.
The devices will be especially handy when on foot in an unknown town or city. It would be easy to look up a contact, have there address at the ready, and create a route that gets you there. The downside currently is the fact you have to connect to an online service to download maps on the fly.
It does mean the maps are always up to date but the download costs of data packets and the overall speed of data transmission in regional areas may limit their use to city areas for now.
Some current and upcomming devices include: ASUS P535, P526, P750, AT&T Tilt 8925, Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T Series, Garmin nüvifone, Gigabyte GSmart i350, HP 910, Motorola A1000, E815, A780, Nokia 6275i, 6210 Navigator, E90 Communicator, Samsung SGH-i600, Siemens SXG75 and Sony Ericsson C702.
